Kaizer Chiefs Fired up Ahead of Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs will be riding high into their Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates on Saturday, 1 February.

Amakhosi picked up a commanding 4-0 victory over Free Agents FC in the Nedbank Cup yesterday, Sunday 26 January. Pule Mmodi scored a brace, and goals from Inacio Miguel and Ranga Chivaviro cemented the win much to the delight of the crowd at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, Gauteng.

Assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef expressed cautious optimism for the upcoming derby during a post-match conference, stating: “The derby is 50/50 for both teams. We will win, we will see next week during the match,”

Despite his hope for the squad’s progress this season, he also admitted: “Honestly, we have a good team, not very good players, but a good team.”

Meanwhile, reports claim that Mamelodi Sundowns forward, Thembinkosi Lorch, could soon don the Kaizer Chiefs jersey. Talks between the two clubs over the former Pirates star’s transfer are reportedly in the final stages.

The 31-year-old joined Sundowns from Pirates last year under Rulani Mokwena’s persuasion, but struggled to find form at Chloorkop. Mokwena’s departure, partly due to disagreements over Lorch’s signing, left him sidelined and he has made just seven appearances this season.

The Chiefs are currently fifth on the Betway Premiership log with 21 points. They trail third-placed Polokwane City by four and leaders Sundowns by 12.
